Former UH president Simone retiring from N.Y. post

Al Simone came to the University of Hawai'i in 1983 and was vice president of academic affairs before being chosen as UH president in 1985. He left UH in 1992 to take the top job at Rochester Institute of Technology.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Former University of Hawai'i president Al Simone is retiring from the job he took after leaving UH, president of Rochester Institute of Technology.

Simone came to UH in 1983 and was vice president of academic affairs before being chosen as UH president in 1985.

During his seven years leading the statewide UH system, two new schools were created at Manoa: the School of Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific Studies, and the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology.

Simone become RIT president after he left UH in 1992.

RIT said Monday it has hired a top administrator at the University of Maryland to replace Simone.

William Destler, senior vice president for academic affairs at Maryland, will become RIT president on July 1.
