Peter Moses was convicted in 1999 of using a police officer's weapon to shoot officer Earl Haskell during a struggle near the Makapu'u Lookout.

On appeal, Moses' original sentence of life without parole was overturned. He later pleaded guilty and Circuit Judge Steven Alm today imposed the new sentence, noting that the prosecutor and defense lawyer described the defendant as remorseful.

"There is a glimmer of hope," Alm said, after Moses said he was sorry for what he had done and apologized to the officers and to his own family.

The shooting occurred after officers attempted to arrest Moses for breaking into a car. During a struggle, Moses gained control of one of the officer's guns and shot Haskell in the stomach. Haskell was hospitalized two months but later returned to duty.
