Four-time Iditarod champion withdraws

By Mary Pemberton
Associated Press

RAINY PASS, Alaska — Four-time Iditarod champion Doug Swingley of Lincoln, Mont., sustained the injuries between Finger Lake and Rainy Pass, about 110 miles northwest of Anchorage, officials said.

Details of how he was injured were not immediately available.

Swingley told officials he didn't want to continue because he didn't think he would be able to physically care for his dogs throughout the rest of the 1,100-mile race.

Swingley finished second last year. He won titles in 1995, 1999, 2000 and 2001. The Montana musher was the first person from outside Alaska to win the Iditarod.
