HECO restores power in Kalihi

Advertiser Staff

About 5,000 homes and businesses in the Kalihi area have had power restored after losing electricity this evening when a transmission line malfunctioned, a Hawaiian Electric Co, spokeswoman said.

All customers had power back by 7:39 p.m., HECO spokeswoman Lynne Unemori said.

The affected areas included Kalihi, Kalihi Valley and the entrance to Sand Island, Unemori said.

Something caused a transmission line to trip offline about 6:25 p.m. Under normal circumstances, customers are automatically transferred to backup lines, she said. That did not happen, and HECO sent crews to power substations to manually switch customers to backup lines.
