  • STAN MASAMITSU, president of the Tony Group Autoplex in Central O'ahu, has received the 2007 TIME magazine Quality Dealer Award, the automobile industry's most prestigious award for car dealers. Masamitsu was one of only 60 automobile dealers, from more than 19,500 nationwide, nominated for the 38th annual award. The award is sponsored by the magazine, in association with Goodyear, in cooperation with the National Automobile Dealers Association. Masamitsu grew up in the business: his father started his first Honda dealership in Japan in 1967. After graduation, the younger Masamitsu joined two of the family's Southern California dealerships, and in 1994, returned to Hawai'i. He was promoted to president of the Tony Group in 1996. Hawai'i's first "auto mall," the Tony Group Autoplex, opened in 2001.

  • The entry deadline has been extended for The BUILDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION OF HAWAI'I 22nd Annual Renaissance Building and Remodeling Awards, which will be announced May 4, at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel. The statewide competition is open to new or remodeled residential and commercial projects not previously entered in the competition. Entries are open to contractors, developers, architects and designers, including kitchen and bath. Entry divisions include residential remodeling, commercial remodeling, new residential, new commercial, Hawai'i "BuiltGreen," historical, landscape, and kitchen and bath. Entry deadline: March 16.   • The Organization of Women Leaders (OWL) conferred its leadership awards to JOYCE INGRAM-CHINN and CLAIRE Y. NAKAMURA at its recent annual luncheon. Ingram-Chinn, past president of OWL, an author, behavioral health consultant and civic leader, was recognized with the private sector award. The public sector awardee, Nakamura, state Department of Public Safety deputy director for administration, is an OWL board member and treasurer for the organization. Awardees are selected by the OWL board based on achievement within their jobs and contribution to the community at large. Ingram-Chinn is also founder of Pacific Institute for Chemical Dependence, a non-profit training organization for those with chemical dependence and substance abuse. She is the former chief of the state Department of Health, Alcohol and Drug Abuse branch. Nakamura previously served as director for system administrative affairs at the University of Hawai'i System Office. She was recently the first Asian female to be inducted to the National Institute of Corrections Deputy Directors.

  • Hawai'i Self Storage's Salt Lake facility manager, Shaun Salvador, has been named 2006 industry manager of the year by national trade publication's Self Storage Now! and Mini-Storage Messenger. Salvador and about 100 other managers nationwide were considered for the national honor. Since becoming manager of the 24-hour, 2,000-unit facility, Salvador increased revenues by almost $500,000 in 2006, maintained 95 percent occupancy, assisted with marketing efforts and a Web site redesign, oversaw the company's scholarship program and led the company in community volunteer work with more than 50 service hours last year.

  • Yves Garnier, head chef of Halekulani's La Mer restaurant, was recently bestowed the title of Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur by the nation of France. France's highest decoration, the National Order of the Legion of Honor, is granted for gallantry in military or civilian life for work that enhances the reputation of France through scholarship, arts, sciences and politics. Garnier has been the chef de cuisine of La Mer since 1996. Before Halekulani, Garnier worked in restaurants in Monte Carlo, San Francisco and Florida. He specializes in "cuisine du soleil" (cuisine of the sun) marrying French cuisine and Island culture.

  • KGMB-TV9 News at 10 p.m. has been nominated for "Best Newscast" by the Associated Press Television and Radio Association. The station's news team, led by anchors KIM GENNAULA and KEAHI TUCKER, bypassed longtime No. 1 KHON in the November Nielsen ratings for the 10 p.m. slot. KHON, with JOE MOORE as its news anchor, remained the top-rated news station for the 6 p.m. time period. The announcement comes as the local CBS affiliate is being sold by Emmis Communications Corp. to Mainland investment firm, HITV Operating Co.

  • The Hawai'i Psychological Association (HPA) beat out 60 states, provinces and territories to win the American Psychological Association's (APA) 2006 Diversity Award for outstanding accomplishments in diversity programs. The ongoing leadership of HPA's Diversity Committee chairs — June Ching (2003), Karuna Joshi-Peters, (2004-05), and Claudette Ozoa, (2006) — was specifically cited as noteworthy. The chairs have been dedicated to sponsoring workshops and developing events that enhance multi-cultural competencies and awareness, along with increasing representation of diverse groups in the membership and governance of the association. The professional association represents over 300 Hawai'i psychologists.
