Kids, vote for your favorite book for the Nene Award

By Catherine E. Toth
Advertiser Urban Honolulu Writer

Students in grades four through six can vote for their favorite book through March 16 to win this year's Nene Award.

Submit votes at your school or any public library.

The award began in 1959 when third-graders at the then-University Elementary Lab School decided to create a book award. The nene goose, the state bird, was chosen for the award's motif. That year, the children selected "The Blue Mountain" by Beth Lewis to win the first Nene Award.

Other winners have included "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" by Judy Blume (1975), "How to Eat Fried Worms" by Thomas Rockwell (1976), "Bunnicula" by Deborah and James Howe (1983), "My Teacher is an Alien" by Bruce Coville (1995) and "Eragon" by Christopher Paolini (2006).
