Historic Preservation Awareness Day tomorrow

With the proposal of the demolition of the Walker Estate in Nu'uanu valley, historic preservation is an issue that's heating up in this year's legislative session. Tomorrow you can learn about preservation efforts and priorities at the fifth annual Historic Preservation Awareness day 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow on the third and fourth floors of the State Capitol.The event focuses on the importance of historic preservation to the well-being of communities.
A speakers' series from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in room 423 will feature William R. Chapman, director of the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's historic preservation program; Timothy E. Johns, CEO of the Estate of Samuel Mills Damon; and Thomas Quinlan, general contractor of the Historic Properties Services.
About three quarters of the House of Representatives are members of the year-old Heritage Caucus, spearheaded by Rep. Cindy Evans and Rep. Corinne Ching. The caucus focuses on identifying, protecting and preserving the state's cultural resources.
