Hawai'i's voyaging canoes to depart Pohnpei for Chuuk

The voyaging canoes Hokule'a and Alingano Maisu will leave Pohnpei tomorrow morning, six days after their arrival, the voyage leadership announced today.

Voyage spokeswoman Kathy Thompson said the canoes' crews have been busy with touring archaeological sites on Pohnpei, cleaning and packing the canoes, changing Hokule'a's sail rig to its original crab-claw design, testing electronic equipment and making other preparations for departure. Last night, they were guests at a dinner hosted by a U.S. ambassador. The U.S. Embassy for Federated States of Micronesia is in Pohnpei

"It's been raining the last couple of days and humidity is more than high, but all are well and happy," she said in an e-mail note.

The canoes, along with escort boat Kama Hele, will sail to the island of Chuuk on the third leg of their voyage from Hawai'i to Micronesia, which has been named "Ku Holo Mau."

The voyagers initially had hoped to leave Sunday, but the date slipped as shorework piled up.
