Hawaiian festival celebrates Prince Kuhio March 24-25

The Great Hawaiian Folk Life Festival, celebrating the birthday anniversary of Prince Jonah Kuhio and two other Island milestones, will be held March 24 and 25 in Waikiki.

The celebration, marking the 135th birthday anniversary of Prince Kuhio, will feature live music and dance, workshops and demonstrations of slack-key guitar, 'ukulele, Hawaiian nose flute and ipu and more. The 200th anniversary of the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and the 35th anniversary of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs O'ahu Council "Ho'ike'ike" are linked to the festival.

Among the highlights:

  • The Prince Kuhio parade, from 4 p.m. March 24, beginning at Fort DeRussy and traveling on Kalakaua Avenue to Kapi'olani Park.

  • "Na Mele No Na Pua," a free concert, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. March 24 at the Grand Lana'i of the Outrigger Embassy Suites hotel at the new Waikiki Beach Walk.

  • Two days of performances, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 24 and 25, at Kapi'olani Park Bandstand. Entertainers will include Tony Conjugacion, Pali, Ledward Ka'apana, Ho'okena, Maunalua, Ku'uipo Kumukahi, Sean Na'auao, Makana, and hula halau.

  • Sunset on the Beach festivities, from 5 to 10 p.m. March 24 and 25, at Queen's Surf Beach, featuring evening screenings of "The Little Mermaid" March 24, with music by Kaukahi and Makana, and "Shark Tale" March 25, with entertainment by Pali and Tony Conjugacion.

    Free workshops on the musical instruments will be held from 1:30 to 4 p.m. March 24 at the Outrigger Waikiki. Registration required. Call 921-9731.
