Irons advances to fourth round

Kaua'i's Bruce Irons is the only Hawai'i surfer remaining in the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia.

Irons eliminated fellow Hawai'i surfer, Pancho Sullivan, 12.77-11.50, in today's third round in 3- to 5-foot surf.

Bruce's older brother, former three-time world champion Andy Irons, was eliminated in the second round over the weekend.

Bruce Irons, 27, is set to take on Australia's Joel Parkinson in the fourth round.

Three is one day remaining for the $300,000 Quiksilver Pro, the first of 11 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour (WCT) events that comprise the 2007 World Tour that will end in Hawai'i in December.

TRIGG-LAWLER MATCH SET FOR MARCH 31

Middleweight champion Frank Trigg will face Robbie Lawler in the main event of the Icon Sport: Epic card on March 31 at the Blaisdell Center Arena.

The championship bout was finalized recently by the Icon Sport organization.

Trigg will be making his first title defense since defeating Jason "Mayhem" Miller for the championship last December. Trigg, who trains in Las Vegas, recently defeated Japan's Kazuo Misaki in Las Vegas to improve to 15-5.

Trigg is now ranked No. 7 in the world in the 185-pound class by www.mmaweekly.com.

Lawler, who trains in Iowa, is 13-4. He held the Icon Sport middleweight championship belt for one year before losing to Miller last October.

Miller, Renato "Charuto" Verissimo and several other Hawai'i fighters are expected to fight on the undercard.

HILO SWEEPS PAIR FROM GRAND CANYON

Leo Sing Chow drove in two runs and Charity Senas singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning as host Hawai'i-Hilo beat Grand Canyon, 3-2, yesterday to complete a Pacific West Conference doubleheader sweep at Carvalho Park, Hilo.

Sarah Weisskopf pitched a six-hitter with two strikeouts and one walk for the Vulcans (18-2 overall, 6-0 PWC).

In the opener, Hawai'i-Hilo sent 10 batters to the plate in a five-run first inning, and Sing Chow hit a bases-clearing double in the team's five-run sixth inning in a 10-3 victory.

Meghan Jost added two RBIs in support of winning pitcher Tracy Ryan, who tossed a three-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk against Grand Canyon (11-14, 2-4).


GOLF

UH FIFTH AFTER SECOND ROUND AT SAN JOSE

The University of Hawai'i women's golf team stands in fifth place, 21 strokes behind leader and host San Jose State yesterday after the second round of Spartan Invitational at the Almaden Country Club.

San Jose State (581) holds a 11-stroke lead over Colorado (592) in the 14-team tournament, which concludes today with one round.

The Rainbow Wahine (602) are led by Xyra Suyetsugu, who is tied for 15th at 6-over-par 150 (75-75).

San Jose State's Jenelle Gomez leads the field at 6-under 138 (70-68).
