The City and County of Honolulu faces a $300,000 fine for 2005 and 2006 wastewater discharge violations at Kualoa Regional Park in Kaneohe, the State Department of Health's Clean Water and Waste Branches said. The city has 20 days to contest the order and if it does, a hearing will be scheduled.
The DOH announced the violations Tuesday, saying in a new release that the city has been cited for discharging or releasing wastewater from its comfort stations into state waters and onto the ground, violating State Water Quality Standards (SWQS) and Wastewater rules.
"It is such a big loss when people can't use the ocean," said Laurence Lau, Deputy Director for Environmental Health. "We want the beach to be safe for swimming. The city has a responsibility to maintain its parks' comfort stations and protect the health of residents and visitors who use the parks."
The DOH also ordered the city to take immediate remedial actions to prevent further wastewater discharges to the water or ground.
