LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The University of Hawai'i football team will play Charleston Southern University, a I-AA school, Sept. 22 at Aloha Stadium, as the Western Athletic Conference moved closer to finalizing its schedule today during meetings at the WAC Basketball Tournament in Las Cruces, N.M.

Besides nonconference games Sept. 15 at Nevada Las Vegas and Dec. 1 at home against Washington, UH has reserved Sept. 1 and Nov. 3 for nonconference games. UH also will play eight conference games in what is expected to be a 13-game schedule.

The WAC will fill the other two Hawaii opening dates — Oct. 20 and Nov. 24 — with league games.

Commissioner Karl Benson said the Nov. 24 game likely will be Boise State at Hawaii, which ESPN is interested in televising.

Benson said he expects the conference schedule to be finalized tomorrow.

Charleston Southern's Buccaneers were 9-2 last season, finishing with their first-ever national ranking.
