State bans gill-net fishing in some Island waters

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle has signed a restrictive new set of regulations on the controversial practice of lay gill-net fishing.

The regulations create total bans on the use of the nets off Maui and parts of O'ahu, and establish a number of restrictions on their use in the remaining state shoreline areas.

Those restrictions ban night netting, limit the use of a net to four hours per day, and require nets not be left unattended for more than a half hour and be inspected every two hours. Too, all nets would need to be registered with the state and would have identification tags.
