East-West Center to celebrate Thai pavilion

Advertiser Staff

The East-West Center will celebrate the reconstruction of its Thai pavilion on Sunday.

The pavilion, called a sala, was given to the center in 1967 by Bhumibol Adulyadej, the king of Thailand. It was put together, but later taken down as it aged. In October, the sala was reconstructed by a crew of traditional Thai craftsmen on the grounds of the East-West Center.

The opening of the sala coincides with an exhibition at the center, called "Sala: Gem of Thai Architecture." The sala celebration starts at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, followed by a reception at the center exhibition from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The exhibition opens tomorrow and runs through May 23.

The exhibition and Sunday event are free and open to the public.

For more information, call 944-7584 or e-mail dunnp@eastwestcenter.org. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed on Saturdays.
