Fire crews mopping up brushfire near Makaha school
Advertiser Staff
Four fire companies are back at the scene of yesterday's brushfire in Makaha, the first large-scale brushfire of the year."Basically, they're just doing mop-up operations," said fire Capt. Frank Johnson. "The perimeter is secure, there have been no new 'flare-ups' and we want to keep that from happening."
The blaze yesterday blackened about 300 acres of vacant land on the mauka side of Kamaile Elementary School. No buildings were damaged or threatened by the fire.
Students at the school were relocated from one side of the school to the other as a precaution, but none was sent home.
Yesterday's fire was reported about 11 a.m. and finally brought under control about 7 p.m.
There were no injuries.
