Kwan film to make Hawai'i premiere

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

Nancy Kwan, a pioneering Asian actress in Hollywood who starred in "The World of Suzie Wong" and "Flower Drum Song," premieres her newest film, "Ray of Sunshine," in an April 15 benefit for the Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation at the Hawai'i Theatre.

"Sunshine," a film by Norbert Meisel, is about an aspiring young pianist (Cheyenne Rushing) who leaves a troubled life in California to search for her footloose musician father (former Honolulu resident John Phillip Law) who abandoned her as a child. Kwan plays Miss Lily, a jazz club owner, who befriends the pianist. Kwan co-produced the film with Meisel, who did the screenplay with executive producer Rae Rodgers.

The premiere will feature entertainment by Nohelani Cypriano and the Beautiful Hawai'i Revue. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the program starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $28, available at the Hawai'i Theatre (528-0506, www.hawaiitheatre.com) or through the O'ahu Rotary Clubs. A private reception at the Plaza Club precedes the premiere; for tickets and VIP seating ($175), call 284-5413.
