Golfer from Japan leads State Amateur Stroke Play

Defending champion Toru Nakajima of Japan shot a 4-under-par 68 Thursday to take a three-stroke lead after the first round of the State Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Pearl Country Club.

Pearl City's Brandan Kop and Honolulu's Shuichi Udagawa share second at 71, with Kapa'a's Casey Watabu and Kaimuki High junior Chan Kim tied for fourth at 72.

Sacred Hearts junior Ayaka Kaneko, the only female in the 86-player field, is in a three-way tie for sixth at 1-over 73.

The 72-hole tournament continues today at 6:50 a.m.
