Unknown substance in Ala Wai Canal not hazardous

Advertiser Staff

A powdery substance found in the Ala Wai Canal turned out to be nontoxic, the U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday night.

Coast Guard pollution investigators and members of the Honolulu Fire Department responded to an unknown substance yesterday afternoon.

The substance seemed to be coming from a storm drain between Kalakaua and McCully bridges.

The pollution investigators were unable to take samples but determined it was not an oil-based or hazardous material. While personnel were on scene, the substance stopped coming out of the drain and dissipated.

The Coast Guard Sector Command Center contacted the state department to continue the investigation.
