Firefighters assist 2 hikers at Diamond Head summit
Advertiser Staff
Honolulu firefighters had a two-for-one morning at the top of the Diamond Head Crater trail. They were summoned about 9:40 this morning to aid a 79-year-old man who complained of feeling ill by the time he reached the trail's summit.
Rescue workers climbed to the top of the trail and met the man who was then feeling better. They escorted the man, who hiked back down the trail under his own power and was turned over to city paramedics.
But as rescue workers were just about ready to leave the trail, a second man began complaining of difficulty breathing.
The Fire Department's helicopter, which had been called in to aid the first hiker only to find its services were not needed, airlifted the second hiker to the parking area inside Diamond Head Crater so he, too, could be turned over to paramedics.
