WAILUKU
County fined over landfills

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Health imposed penalties totaling $62,300 against Maui County for storm-water violations at landfills in Hana, on Lana'i and at the Moloka'i Integrated Waste Facility.

The county was cited for failing to maintain drainage swales, detention basins and secondary containments, which allowed polluted storm water to enter the ocean off Moloka'i and Lana'i last year.

The violations included failing to maintain adequate secondary oil containment and failing to sample and analyze storm water at all three facilities as required under its permits.

The county has 20 days to contest the penalties.
