Big Island police arrested three people Tuesday for allegedly burglarizing eight classrooms at Kaumana Elementary School.

On Tuesday, school staff discovered about $15,000 in computer and other equipment had been stolen by burglars who also did more than $1,500 damage to school facilities.

Police discovered some stolen items cached in bushes near Akolea Road, and found three youths at their home a few miles from the school.

A 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy were charged with eight counts of burglary, and the older youth was also charged with attempted assault. An 18-year-old man was also arrested in the case, police said.

DRIVER FLEES POLICE, CRASHES

Charges were pending against a 48-year-old man who crashed a car that was reported stolen in Makaha early yesterday while trying to flee from police.

The man, who has 31 prior convictions according to Hawai'i Criminal Justice Data Center records, was arrested at Farrington Highway and Orange Street at 3:09 a.m. for investigation of auto theft.

A police officer had initially tried to stop the driver for a traffic violation.

The man sped off but lost control of the car, which jumped a curb and got stuck on an embankment.

KNIFE ATTACK ON OFFICER ALLEGED

Police arrested a 29-year-old Salt Lake man yesterday after he allegedly threw a pocket knife at a police officer in front of a supermarket on Ala Lilikoi.

The knife missed the officer. The man, who had 16 prior convictions, was booked for investigation of first-degree terroristic threatening at 1:11 a.m.

Police said the officer noticed the man acting suspiciously as he left the market with an object in his hand. When asked to raise his hand, the man allegedly threw the knife at the officer, police said.
