UH-Hilo, BYUH players get top Pac West soccer honors

University of Hawaii-Hilo junior forward Karen Weatherby was named co-Player of the Year, and Brigham Young-Hawaii's Emily Mearns freshman of the year on the Pacific West Conference's women's soccer team announced Thursday.Four other Hawaii athletes also were named to the first team. They are BYUH junior forward Jill Harr (Diamond Bar, Calif.), Hawaii Pacific junior goalkeeper Melisaa Naeole (Kahului, St. Anthony), HPU senior defender Kerianne Pascua (Kaneohe, Maryknoll), and Hawaii-Hilo freshman midfielder Kelly White (Santa Barbara).
The all-conference awards were nominated and voted upon by the league coaches (BYUH, HPU, UH-Hilo, Chaminade, Notre Dame de Namur and Grand Canyon).
Weatherby, of Arroyo Grande, Calif., shared honors with senior forward Hope Seiffert of Notre Dame de Namur.
Seiffert helped lead NDNU to the Pacific West Championship as the Argos rolled to a 9-0-1 Pac West record. She posted 13 points on five goals and three assists.
Weatherby led UH-Hilo with 13 goals and four assists and 30 points this year. She scored the first goal in Vulcans' history and recorded the program's first and only hat trick. She also scored against each of the Pac West schools with the exception of Grand Canyon.
Mearns, of San Ramon, Calif., guided BYU-Hawai'i to a 12-4 overall mark and an 8-2 record in the Pac West. She scored 31 points on 13 goals and five assists.
NDNU head coach Joe Silveira was named the Pacific West Women's Coach of the Year.
Hawaii players on the second team were Chaminade Malu Afong and Michelle Halloran, BYUH's Kristi Astin, Kristina Nibley and Sarah Norton, Hawaii Pacific's Malia Kane and UH-Hilo's Healani Leite-Ah Yo. BYUH's Jessica Clement and HPU's Jamie Hirai were honorable mention.
