TELEVISED FINALS

The finals of the 22nd annual Hawai'i State Spelling Bee will air at 8 p.m. Sunday on Oceanic's channel OC 16.

Fourteen students from across the state will be vying for bragging rights as Hawai'i's No. 1 speller when they compete in The Honolulu Advertiser's 22nd annual Hawai'i State Spelling Bee on Sunday.

The winner will represent Hawai'i in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., May 30-31. The state finalists represent the best of the best. They out-dueled crowds of other students to reach their district spelling bees. The winner and runner-up from each district are invited to the state bee.

Last year's state winner was Jasmine Kaneshiro of Hawai'i Baptist Academy. She was eliminated in the fourth round of the national final.

This year's contestants are:

  • Talmage Nakamoto, 11, Konawaena Middle, Hawai'i District winner, son of Shan and Traci Nakamoto.

  • Kayah Ignacio, 12, Kamehameha Middle, Hawai'i District runner-up, son of Reggie and Kim Ignacio.

  • Jordan Komoda, 13, Highlands Intermediate, Leeward District winner, son of Kyle and Colette Komoda.

  • Lawrence Castillo, 13, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Leeward District runner-up, son of James and Mary Ann Castillo.

  • Andrew Dau, 13, St. Ann's, Windward District winner, son of Chris and Lisa Dau.

  • Kekai Glushenko, 12, St. Mark Lutheran, Windward District runner-up, son of Mark and Darrelle Glushenko.

  • Coleby Hanisch, 12, Montessori, Maui District winner, son of Bill and Karen Hanisch.

  • Thomas Vu-Tran, 12, Sacred Hearts, Maui District runner-up, son of Tam Vu-Tran.

  • Spencer Setka, 12, home schooled, Central O'ahu District winner, son of Dominic and Leslie Setka.

  • Anthony Fugo, 14, home schooled, Central O'ahu District runner-up, son of William and Trendalyn Fugo.

  • Andrew Zhou, 13, Stevenson Middle, Honolulu District winner, son of Jack and Phoebe Zhou.

  • Jen Rasay, 13, Kalakaua Middle, Honolulu District runner-up, daughter of Sonny and Josefina Rasay.

  • Canaan Higa, 14, Island School, Kaua'i District winner, son of Guy and Diane Higa.

  • Kellie Kurasaki, 13, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle, Kaua'i District runner-up, daughter of James and Laura Kurasaki.
