Nanakuli head-on crash leaves 1 dead, 2 hurt

Advertiser Staff

A 38-year-old Nanakuli man was killed and two other people injured last night in a head-on crash on Farrington Highway in Nanakuli.

The driver of a pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Department of Emergency Services.

A 40-year-old woman and a 9-year-old boy in the pickup were taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition, Cheplic said.

Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said a cherry-picker-type truck with a boom and basket, which belonged to the city, was heading toward Makaha when it collided with a pickup truck that was Honolulu-bound on Farrington Highway near Princess Kahanu Avenue.

Police Sgt. Lorenzo Ridela said it had been raining heavily and that the city truck spun out of control and into the path of the pickup truck.

"I'm pretty sure that rain played a factor," Ridela said.

It was reported to 911 just before 8:30 p.m.
