High wind advisory posted for Big Island summits

Advertiser Staff

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind advisory for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island.

The advisory means winds of at least 30 mph, with frequent gusts above 50 mph, are expected.

Winds of that strength can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles, forecasters said. They urged drivers to exercise extra caution.

The advisory was to remain in effect until 6 p.m. tonight.
