Kaua'i parenting classes start Wednesday

Advertiser Staff

Classes designed to give parents skills to raise children in today's complex world will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday starting next week at Koloa Elementary School.

At the same time, other classes will be held to provide teens and pre-teens with skills they need to face today's challenges.

"The Parent Project curriculum provides practical solutions for problems faced by parents and teens today," said anti-drug coordinator Theresa Koki. "It also provides a network of ongoing parent-support groups within the community."

The cost of attending the 10-week sessions is $30 per person.

Scholarships are available for all of the classes.

"Having activities and programs like The Parent Project classes that focus on improving communication between parents and their children is an integral part of our Kaua'i Community Drug Response Plan," said Kaua'i Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste. "With harmony in the home, youngsters are less likely to turn to drugs."

Sponsors of the parenting classes include the Kaua'i County's Anti-drug Office, state Department of Education–Parent Community Network Coordinator program, drug prevention and education teams, Kaua'i Police Department and the U.S. Department of Justice.
