Advertiser Staff

One man was killed and two others were injured when a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta flipped over in the Wai'anae-bound lanes of H-1 Freeway, just west of the Makakilo off-ramp, at about 5:15 a.m. today.

One of the car passengers, a man of an unknown age, was declared dead at the scene, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department.

The driver of the car, a 21-year-old man, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious conditiion, while a second passenger was taken to Queen's in critical condition.

Police initially shut down the west-bound lanes of the H-1 Freeway before the Kunia Road on-ramp.

At 6:15 a.m. police were preparing to open the Wai'anae-bound lanes as far as the Makakilo off-ramp.

Immediately after the accident, Wai'anae-bound traffic stacked up in the area, making it difficult for emergency vehicles to reach the scene of the crash.

One of the accident victims was pinned under the overturned car, police said.
