Inter-lsland has history of helping on rescue missions

Advertiser Staff

Inter-Island Helicopters is a company often called upon by Kaua'i officials to help in search and rescue missions.

Today it found itself on the other side of the emergency services ledger when one of its Hughes 500 aircraft went down on the Garden Island's North Shore.

The company's Web site says it's been called on hundreds of times to perform search and rescue missions, saving lives in the process.

It also has lent a hand in other missions, including helping put out brushfires on Kaua'i. It was on one of those flights that the company had a crash on Christmas Day 2005. The son of company owner Ken D'Attilio died from injuries received in the accident. The crash occurred as Jonathan D'Attilio attempted to collect water from a reservoir to douse a brushfire.

Inter-Island also has been cited for skillful flying in other missions, including a 1998 flight that helped pull out victims of an Ohana Helicopters crash that killed five people and a pilot on the south face of Wai'ale'ale Crater.
