Sea Life Park fire spares creatures on display

A fire this morning at Sea Life Park in Makapu'u destroyed a changing room at the park's Sea Trek Adventure display, but none of the sea creatures on display at the park appeared to be harmed, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.

Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the two-alarm blaze reported at 3:15 a.m. was limited to the changing area, which is adjacent to the park's huge reef tank display.

"The room that was destroyed was used by park visitors to shower and change into their swimming or dive gear prior to getting into the reef tank," Seelig said.

The wooden changing room was about 20 feet long and 10 feet wide and will have to be rebuilt, Seelig said. A fire inspector was at the scene at 5:15 a.m. but had not come up yet with a monetary damage assessment or cause for the fire.

Firefighters were at the park 10 minutes later and had the fire under control within another 10 minutes, Seelig said.

He said park employees told him the Sea Trek Adventure would not be offered today but that the rest of the park would be open for business.
