Arizona edges Hawai'i in baseball, 3-1

Advertiser Staff

Arizona scored two unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning to break a 1-all tie in a 3-1 win against Hawai'i on Sunday to take 2 of 3 in the nonconference baseball series at Les Murakami Stadium.

Cory Burns (1-1) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, striking out three for the Wildcats (15-6). Daniel Schlereth pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save.

Matt Daly (1-1) was charged with two unearned runs in two innings for the Rainbows (15-8), whose only series losses this season have been to nationally ranked teams. Wichita State swept a three-game series from UH earlier.

Joshua Schneider went seven innings, allowing a run, four hit with no walks and three strikeouts.

David Coulon allowed a run, six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings for Arizona.

Arizona coach Andy Lopez was ejected in the bottom of the seventh, apparently arguing batter interfernce when Eli Christensen stole second.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the first. Diallo Fon led off with a single and one out later took third on C.J. Ziegler's single to left-center. Fon scored on Brad Glenn's chop single to second that was stopped by shortstop Eli Christensen.

Hawai'i tied it in the second. Brandon Haislet walked, took second on a wild pitch, took third when Kris Sanchez grounded out to shortstop and scored when Eli Christensen did the same. Landon Hernandez walked, but was caught stealing to end the inning.

The Wildcats broke the deadlock in the eighth with Matt Daly starting the inning. Dwight Childs walked and scored on a double-error when Abel bunted to Daly, whose throw to first sailed down the right field foul area. Right fielder Jorge Franco had trouble fielding the ball, allowing Childs to score and Abel to take third. Daly got T. J. Steele to ground out to short to hold the runner at third and struck out Sedbrook. But Abel scored when left fielder Derek DuPree dropped a fly to left off the bat of C.J. Ziegler to make it 3-1 before Glenn struck out.

Schlereth started the ninth for the Wildcats. After striking out Frash to start the inning, Haislet walked. But Sanchez struck out, as did Christensen to end the game.
