Big Isle pedestrian killed in hit-and-run named

A pedestrian who died yesterday after being injured in a hit-and-run accident Friday night in Puna was identified today by Big Island Traffic Enforcement Unit investigators as Raymond L. Carvalho IV, 34, of Mountain View.Carvalho was walking north on North Kulani Road at 10:44 p.m. when he was hit by a vehicle traveling in the same direction. Carvalho died at the Hilo Medical Center at 2:38 a.m. Saturday.
Police believe Carvalho was struck by a Chevrolet that should have damage to its right headlight area.
It is the Big Island's first pedestrian death this year and the ninth traffic fataility of the year.
