Kim has 3-shot lead in state amateur

State high school champion Chan Kim will take a three-stroke lead into today's final round of the Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Championship a Pearl Country Club. Play starts at 11:30 a.m.

Kim, a junior at Kaimuki High School, shot a 2-under-par 70 yesterday for a 54-hole total of 7-under 209.

Toru Nakajima of Japan made a run to defend his title with a 68 for a 212 total.

Tu Hyon Kim is third at 71—214 and Kaua'i's Casey Watabu, the 2006 U.S. Public Links champion, is fourth at 69—216.

Sacred Hearts Academy junior Ayaka Kaneko, the lone female in the 86-player field, stayed in fifth with 77—222.


TRACK AND FIELD

WICHMANN PLACES 11TH

University of Hawai'i junior Annett Wichmann amassed 4,007 points to finish 11th in the pentathlon yesterday at the NCAA Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.

Wichmann, the first Rainbow Wahine to qualify for the national meet, fell short of her goal of 4,100 points. Arizona State's Jacquelyn Johnson scored 4,393 points to finish first in the 16-athlete field.

Wichmann started strong, setting a personal best and school record in the 60-meter hurdles despite finishing 16th in 9.01 seconds. It was worth 908 points.

Her other results were: high jump (school-record tying 5-7 3/4, 879 points, tie for fourth), shot put (41-4 1/2, 702, fifth), long jump (17-10 1/4, 683, 13th) and 800 (2:19.18, 835, fifth).


SWIMMING

MACKEY FALLS SHORT

University of Hawai'i senior Nicole Mackey had the 26th-best time in the 200-yard backstroke preliminary round and failed to advance yesterday at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis, Minn.

Mackey, the lone Rainbow Wahine swimmer to qualify for the meet, finished in 1:58.27.

Hawai'i placed 27th in the 41-team field with 15 points, all from diving. Arizona won with 375.


SOFTBALL

HAWAI'I-HILO SWEEPS

Haunani Haasenritter drove in three runs and Brittany Dock hit a two-run homer as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Notre Dame de Namur, 5-3, yesterday to complete a sweep of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at UH Hilo Field.

Sarah Weisskopf, who had a shutout through five innings, pitched a six-hitter for the Vulcans (22-2, 10-0 PacWest).

Cierra Keeney hit a three-run homer with two outs in the sixth for the Argos (7-30, 2-12).

In the opener, Haasenritter's two-run double sparked a five-run fifth as the Vulcans rallied for a 7-1 victory.

Chelsea Osborne had three hits and three RBIs, and Tracy Ryan pitched a three-hitter for Hilo.


BASEBALL

HPU DROPS TWO

Jacob Hanna hit a three-run homer and Dan Colella hit a two-run shot as Grand Canyon overpowered Hawai'i Pacific, 19-7, last night in a non-conference game at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Hanna and Brian Evans each had three hits for the Antelopes (11-10), who amassed 17 hits against seven pitchers.

Colton Silva hit a three-run homer and Paul Nishimura had three hits and three RBIs for the Sea Warriors (7-8), who had 14 hits.

Earlier, in a game that was suspended by rain in the fourth inning Friday night, Ben Corser permitted five hits and one run over the final four innings to get the win as Grand Canyon prevailed, 5-2.

Colella had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Antelopes.

Spencer Omalza had two hits for the Sea Warriors.
