The way the Rainbow Wahine have been hitting recently, the imperiled folks at Johnson Hall B might consider installing a batting net outside their apartment.

Sophomore Clare Warwick hit a go-ahead home run in the fifth inning and senior slugger Tyleen Tausaga smashed her seventh homer of the season — a two-run rocket to right — as the University of Hawai'i softball team notched its second win of the week over No. 14 Oregon State, 4-2, to win the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament last night at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Sophomore pitcher Justine Smethurst, who shared tournament MVP honors with Tausaga, gave up two runs on nine hits in seven innings

The Wahine (23-5) are one home run shy of the school's season record of 42, which was set last year. Kate Robinson leads the team with eight home runs. So far this season, 81 of the team's 131 RBIs have come off of homers.

For the second consecutive night, Smethurst found herself with bases loaded in the first inning. Again, she pitched herself out of the jam and found her rhythm as the game progressed.

"It's one of the hardest situations be be in," Smethurst said. "But I get a lot of confidence knowing how well we've been hitting."

In the third inning, Hawai'i's Stacey Yamada walked and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Tanisha Milca and a flyout by Warwick. Junior Kaulana Gould drove home the run with a single that zipped through OSU pitcher Brianne McGowan's legs and and past second base.

The Beavers tied the score 1-1, when Paige Lowe hit a pop single to right-center that scored Alana Ford from second base.

Hawai'i took control of the game with two outs in the top of the fifth. Warwick's homer to left-center put the UH ahead 2-1. Gould followed with a single down the first-base line, setting up Tausaga's Shot Heard Round the Dorms.

Tausaga said she's just been concentrating on getting on base.

"This whole season, pitchers have tried to pitch around me, so I've just been trying to get on because I know Kate has been hitting really good behind me and getting me home," Tausaga said. "She's been hitting bombs."

With his team hitting well and a solid rotation of four pitchers playing consistently, UH head coach Bob Coolen said his team is building momentum for the Western Athletic Conference season, which begins March 19 against Nevada.

"The kids are really feeling the moment," Coolen said.

Tausaga agrees.

"Everybody has been playing really well," she said. "March is supposed to be one of our hardest months. We need all these games to build us up for the conference. I don't know, everybody better watch out because everything is going great for us now."
