GOING VEGAS
Stardust tower coming down

By Anthony Curtis

If it hasn't happened already, what's left of the Stardust tower will be razed by the end of this week. Boyd Gaming has kept the implosion date a secret, but the buzz is that it could happen tomorrow.

ANOTHER BLAST: The Stardust will mark the second implosion on the north end of the Strip within a week. Last week, the garages on the far north end of the Wynn Las Vegas property were blasted. They remained from the old Desert Inn and were cleared as part of ongoing construction on the Wynn's sister property, Encore.

SAHARA SALE: The Sahara has been sold to a Los Angeles entertainment and hotel magnate for an undisclosed price believed to be between $300 million and $400 million. The deal took a year to complete and is being financed by a San Francisco-based private equity firm. No plans for the property have been announced, but the new owner, Sam Nazarian, runs a network of swank hotels in South Beach and Beverly Hills, and trendy nightclubs around L.A. So another Las Vegas outlet for Hollywood hip is anticipated. The Sahara opened in 1952 and underwent a $100 million upgrade about 10 years ago.

STATION SPECIALS: Station Casinos' ongoing specials at its Station and Fiesta properties include a bacon-and-eggs breakfast ($1.99), cheeseburger and fries ($2.99), hot-turkey platter ($6.99), and steak and shrimp ($7.99); all are available 24 hours daily in the coffee shops at each property.

Q. I read about Harrah's taking over the Barbary Coast and keeping the casino open under the name Bill's. Do you know what they intend to do with it?

The hotel and the casino are open and will remain so for quite a while. If Harrah's goes forward with plans to turn the center strip into one giant super-resort, Bill's will be incorporated into it. But for now, the hotel-casino is doing strong business and will remain in operation. One point of confusion might be that reservations for Bill's are being handled by the Imperial Palace, which is also owned by Harrah's.
