Renowned chanters to perform in concert

Advertiser Staff

A landmark concert featuring some of Hawai'i's most renowned chanters will benefit Hoolaupai, the Hawaiian newspaper resource project spearheaded by Bishop Museum.

The concert will take place from 2 to 7 p.m. May 5 at the Dr. Richard T. Mamiya Theater at St. Louis School. Tickets are $25 and will be available at the Bishop Museum box office beginning April 1.

Among the Hawaiian chanters participating will be Cy Bridges, Hokulani Holt-Padilla, Leina'ala Kalama-Heine and Keali'i Reichel. They will perform original oli, or chants, that were written and published in Hawaiian language newspapers from 1834 to 1949.

The goal of the Hawaiian language newspaper project is to digitize and place on the Internet tens of thousands of pages from Hawaiian language newspapers from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
