Advertiser Staff

Virginia S. Hinshaw, provost and executive vice chancellor of the University of California Davis, is expected to be named the next chancellor of the University of Hawai'i-Manoa this week by the UH Board of Regents.

Hinshaw's name comes before the board for approval at its regular monthly meeting Thursday and Friday, scheduled at Hawai'i Community College on the Big Island.

A news conference has been scheduled Friday to introduce her.

Under terms of the recommendation brought to the regents by the search committee, Hinshaw would be appointed for a five-year term, starting July 1 of this year, and ending June 30 of 2012.

She would also receive a housing allowance and a joint appointment as professor in the College of Natural Sciences and John A. Burns School of Medicine.

As a virologist Hinshaw has conducted research on viruses for the past 25 years in addition to her academic appointments.
