HPU splits with No. 9 Valdosta

Hawai'i Pacific scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat ninth-ranked Valdosta (Ga.) State, 8-3, yesterday in the opener of a non-conference softball doubleheader at HPU Windward Field.
Briana Collis pitched a three-hitter as the visiting Lady Blazers (15-3) won the second game, 3-0.
The Sea Warriors (14-2) had just one hit — Nicole Kalakau's leadoff single — in their big sixth inning. Valdosta contributed to its downfall with two errors and seven walks, including four with the bases loaded.
Clerisse Lemke pitched five hitless shutout innings in relief to earn the victory.
HPU SWEEPS BYUH
Casey Sugihara had three hits and four RBIs as Hawai'i Pacific beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 8-2, on Saturday night to complete a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader sweep at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
Ciera Senas had four hits and Krystal Plunkett three hits and three RBIs for the Sea Warriors (13-1, 6-0 PacWest).
Crystal De La Cruz had two RBIs for the Seasiders (7-7, 0-2).
In the opener, Jessica Adolph hit two homers and drove in five runs, and Lehua Yap also homered in HPU's 10-5 win. Agesha Lightsy homered for BYUH.

HEINEMANN HONORED
University of Hawai'i sophomore Sascha Heinemann is the Western Athletic Conference Men's Player of the Week.
Heinemann, No. 74 in the latest FILA Collegiate Singles Rankings, defeated No. 34 Matko Maravic of 22nd-ranked Michigan, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5) at the No. 2 position. Heinemann went on to defeat Jerry Makowski of No. 28 Texas A&M, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (4) at the No. 1 position. The Eschwege, Germany native has won six straight dual singles matches and seven of his last eight. Heinemann also has a 6-1 three-set match mark.
Last year, Heinemann was the WAC's Freshman of the Year. He was also selected to the all-WAC first team, becoming the first Rainbow Warrior to earn first-team distinction in 10 years.

PFLUEGER FINISHES FIRST
Honolulu's Alan Pflueger captured the trophy-truck title at the Tecate SCORE Baja 250 Saturday in Ensenada, Mexico.
Driving a Chevy Silverado, Pflueger finished the 216.23-mile race in 4 hours, 4 minutes, 57 seconds.
"It was a good race," Pflueger said. "(The) tires ran good; no flats all day."
