Legacy Awards to honor musicians March 21

The Music Foundation of Hawai'i's second annual Legacy Awards, acknowledging long-time achievement and accomplishment in Island music and recording, will be held March 21 at the Royal Hawaiian hotel's Monarch Room.

The evening begins at 5 p.m. with cocktails and registration, followed at 6 p.m. by dinner and a show. Dance music, featuring the University of Hawai'i Jazz Ensemble and singer Sonya Mendez, will be from 9 p.m.

The Legacy Awards will be bestowed on the following:

i Lifetime Achievement: Gabe Baltazar, saxophonist.

i Best of Show: Andy Bumatai, comedian.

i Entertainer: Danny Kaleikini, veteran Kahala Hilton headliner.

i Male vocalist: Palani Vaughan, Kalakaua-era authority.

i Female vocalist: Nina Keali'iwahamana, soprano.

i Musical group: The Makaha Sons.

i Loyal Garner award: Hawaiian Music Foundation.

i Professional services award: Kika Productions.

i Young Entrepreneurial award: Peter Dods, Easy Music.

i Posthumous award: Alex Anderson, composer.

i Governor Lingle's Fine Arts award: Henry Miyamura, bandmaster.

i Mayor's Performing Arts award: Karen Keawehawai'i.

i Legacy Performing Arts award: Carolyn Berry, arts supporter.

Gov. Linda Lingle and Mayor Mufi Hannemann are expected to attend to present their awards.
