Medical volunteers sought; training starts tonight

Looking to stay one step ahead in case a pandemic ever hits, the state Department of Health is seeking volunteers to join the Hawaii Medical Reserve Corps.

Training on O'ahu begins today, with Neighbor Island training beginning in the near future, the DOH said in a news release.

DOH director Dr, Chiyome Fukino asks retired doctors, nurses and medical technicians to join in the training, as well as business and community activists and other nonmedical personnel.

Medical Reserve teams receive training to respond to local emergencies.

For more information, call 587-6583. Pre-registration for meetings is required.

The first training date is today at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa campus from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

  • March 21: Wai'anae Beach Club, 5:30 to 7 p.m.

  • April 3: UH-Manoa, 5:30 to 7 p.m.
