Quake-damaged Maui highway to take 2 years to fix

Associated Press

KAUPO, Hawai'i — East Maui residents have been told a project to repair unstable cliffs and undermined roadways along Pi'ilani Highway could begin in late May and take about two years to complete.

Mike Miyamoto, deputy director of the county's Department of Public Works and Environmental Management, said the first phase of the repair work will be at Manawainui Gulch.

Mayor Charmaine Tavares and other county officials briefed about 100 residents Sunday during a Kaupo Community Association meeting at Huialoha Church.

The highway is a two-lane roadway that runs from 'Ulupalakua through Kaupo and Kipahulu to Hana.

It was closed in the wake of the magnitude-6.7 earthquake off the Big Island on Oct. 15. The temblor loosened rocks and cliff areas along the highway.
