Attempted robbery at Hawaii National Bank in Kahului

Advertiser Staff

KAHULUI, Maui — Maui police are investigating an attempted bank robbery today at the Hawaii National Bank branch on Pu'unene Avenue in Kahului.

The incident was reported just before 2 p.m., when an unidentified man handed a note demanding money to a bank teller. The note did not mention a weapon, and no weapon was seen, Lt. John Jakubczak said. The would-be robber fled empty-handed before police arrived, he said.

The man was described as being in his late 20s or early 30s, 6 feet tall and weighing about 160 pounds. He was wearing a brown hooded sweatshirt, blue pants and sunglasses.
