High-surf warning for north, west shores until 4 p.m.

Advertiser Staff

A high-surf warning is in effect through 4 p.m. today for north and west shores of O'ahu, Kaua'i, Ni'ihau and Moloka'i, the National Weather Service said.

O'ahu Civil Defense is monitoring the shorelines and will work with the Red Cross to open shelters if necessary.

As of 1 a.m., waves weren't crossing the roads but were within 50 yards near Ma'ili Beach.

The National Weather Service said wave heights of 30 feet will be reached on the North Shore, with 40-footers on the outside reefs.

Western shores will see surf 25 feet, with occasional sets of 30 on the outer reefs.

The rest of the forecast calls for surf along west shores to decrease to 8 feet to 15 feet by the afternoon and surf along eastern shores to be 1 foot to 4 feet, except bigger over areas where the northwest swell wrapped around the island.

Surf along south shores will be 1 foot to 3 feet.
