Services set for ex-Moloka'i athlete killed in car wreck

Advertiser Staff

Services will be held Saturday for former Moloka'i High School basketball star Malia Schnackenberg, 18, who was killed in a car wreck March 5 in La Conchita, Calif.

Schnackenberg moved to La Conchita after graduating from Moloka'i High last year and was attending Santa Barbara City College. She was described as a fine student and a leading scorer on the Lady Farmers girls basketball team, which earned a berth in the 2006 state championship tournament.

Police said Schnackenberg was pulling out into the south-bound lanes of Highway 101 when her vehicle was hit by a north-bound car, according to the Ventura County Star newspaper.

A memorial service was held Friday in Carpinteria. A Moloka'i service will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Gospel Shoes of Christ Jesus Church, with burial to follow at Kapa'akea Cemetery.
