Mesothelioma expert speaks today at UH

Advertiser Staff

The world's foremost expert on mesothelioma, a type of cancer traditionally linked to asbestos exposure, will speak today in Manoa on other causes of the disease.

Dr. Michele Carbone has found that genetics and a particular polio vaccine, widely distributed in the 1950s, could also spur the often fatal cancer. Carbone recently worked with the Turkish government to address an epidemic of mesothelioma in three small villages.

About 50 percent of the deaths in the Turkish villages were caused by mesothelioma.

Carbone's talk, "Mesothelioma: It's Not Just From Asbestos," starts at 3:30 p.m. today in Room 301 of Hamilton Library at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Doors will open at 3:15 p.m.

Refreshments will be served.
