20 more DUI arrests on Big Island; 255 now for year

Twenty drivers on the Big Island were arrested for drunk driving from March 6 to 12, police said.

Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and five were under the age of 21.

There have been 255 DUI arrests so far this year compared with 208 at this time last year, police said, an increase of 23 percent.

Major accidents on the Big Island, however, have decreased by 12 percent compared with last year. So far in 2007, there have been 452 major accidents, compared with 511 during the same period last year.

There have been nine traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with eight during the same period last year.
