Tantalus suspect to be examined by mental experts

A state judge ruled this afternoon that he will appoint three mental-health experts to examine Adam Mau-Goffredo to determine if he is mentally competent to stand trial on charges of murdering three people at Tantalus lookout last year.

Circuit Judge Dexter Del Rosario said once he formally makes the appointments, the experts will have 60 days to report to the court.

The judge will then hold a hearing to determine whether Mau-Goffredo is fit to stand trial.

Mau-Goffredo, who has been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, is being held at Halawa prison.

He is charged with murder in the shooting of a taxi driver and a Kapahulu couple the night of July 6, 2006. He also is charged with robbing a nearby home before he was arrested later that night.

The appointment of the panel suspends criminal proceedings.

No trial date has been set yet on the murder, robbery and related charges.
