Roosevelt used Iwalani Rodrigues' extra gear in the open court and a small lineup to overwhelm visiting Kalaheo, 49-24, last night in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East girls basketball opener.

Rodrigues scored 14 of her 20 points in the first half, with most coming in transition.

"Most of her points came on the break and were created off the defense of other people," Roosevelt coach Bobby Keanini said.

Rodrigues added: "My teammates helped me on that part — defense. I'm just the runner and happened to be there at the right time."

Rodrigues, a 5-foot-9 junior guard, also contributed 11 rebounds, two steals, two blocks and two assists.

Keanini noted she only took a couple of jump shots the entire game.

"She's quick, she's long, she's athletic, she runs lanes extremely well, she crashes the boards," Kalaheo coach Ryan Hogue said.

The Rough Riders went small after halftime and broke the game open by hitting 6 of 8 shots in the third period to take a 40-17 advantage.

Roosevelt's lineup featured Rodrigues, Jayna Tasaka (5-1), Tiana Sugui (5-4), Diana Zane (5-4) and Tiyana Nakasone (5-5). Tasaka and Nakasone didn't start the game.

"We work hard at practice and we came here to win. We all played together," said Rodrigues, who exited for good with 3:35 remaining.

The Mustangs were 1 of 5 from the field and outscored 15-4 in the third.

"We can pick up high on defense and chase a little bit more, ball pressure," Keanini said.

Tasaka scored all seven of her points during a three-minute stretch in the third, including two 3-pointers. Tasia Kamakawiwo'ole, a 5-9 sophomore forward, finished with nine points.

"They are nice surprises to have," Keanini said.

The Rough Riders' largest lead was 45-19 after a free throw by Kamakawiwo'ole with 4:50 remaining.

Roosevelt, last year's state Division I runner-up, finished 18 of 39 from the field, including 9 of 13 in the second half.

The Rough Riders played an aggressive man-to-man defense and the Mustangs struggled to get into their offense.

"Rebounding the ball and defense are what we're living off of now," Keanini said.

Shanadee Canon scored 15 points to lead Kalaheo, which finished 6 of 36 from the field and committed 13 turnovers. Canon scored the Mustangs' first nine points and all four of their points in the third.

"We still haven't found who our shooters are yet," Hogue said. "We rely on Shanadee Canon way too much. We're very young with the rest of our team so we're going to have to find other girls."
