Architect and former Kaua'i Planning Commission member Imaikalani Aiu has been named deputy county planning director, effective next week.

Aiu, the son of former county public information officer Danita Aiu and the late Dr. Patrick Aiu, served two years on the commission before resigning in February.

As a commissioner, he helped work on several of the major planning issues facing the island, including vacation rentals and bed and breakfast operations, big-box stores, traffic-calming techniques and area plans.

Aiu replaces Myles Hironaka, who is returning to a senior planner position.
