State begins improvements at 'Akaka Falls State Park

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources began construction of improvements at 'Akaka Falls State Park on the Big Island.

Because of limited funds, state officials said the project will be done in phases with work starting at the Kahuna Falls lookout and scheduled later on the path to 'Akaka Falls.

Project contractor is Site Engineering, Inc. and the contract is $715,049. There are lookouts at both 'Akaka Falls and Kahuna Falls, and a .4-mile loop footpath connecting the two lookouts. The job will include work on the footpath, stairs and handrail, where aging and weathering have taken a toll.

The park will remain open but work will close the footpath to Kahuna Falls. The second phase of the project isn't scheduled and will make similar improvements to the west leg of the park footpath loop. The parks division notified tour bus companies of these projects.

Completion is expected by the end of October.
