Prospective school surf coaches invited to meeting

Advertiser Staff

Anyone interested in finding out more about becoming a high school surf club coach and the training involved may attend a public meeting 9-10 a.m. Monday at Leilehua High School, Room HH205, 1515 California Ave., in Wahiawa.

The meeting is being chaired by Iris Kahaulelio, who launched the movement to make surfing a high school sport more than a decade ago.

The meeting will cover the requirements for adviser and coach, student athletes and will accept registrations for the April 4-7 coaches course.

Applicants for the surf coach course must pass a swim test the first day. Part of the swim requirements include being able to swim 500 meters in 12 minutes.

Generally schools will not be offering salaries to swim coaches. It will be considered a volunteer position, said Kahaulelio.
